Synopsis

The neuron is shown lying horizontally across the page, with labels around it. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the right way up. The cell body is on the left hand side and is depicted as a textured area with a dot inside (the nucleus) and thin lines extend from around it (dendrites). The cell body is labelled above and a dashed vertical line shows where it ends and the axon begins. The axon is the long thick horizontal line which extends to the right from the end of the cell body. This is also labelled above the diagram. The myelin sheath covers the axon, but has gaps in, called Nodes of Ranvier. The axon splits in two at the end, and then into a number of thinner lines, with dots on the end. These are the synaptic knobs. The parts of the neuron are labelled below the diagram, with dotted leader lines.
